BE SMART video from Officer Garvain and Principal Dinkins

Midlands Be Smart

Calhoun County School District and Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department are dedicated to providing a safe learning environment both at school and at home. Because evidence strongly suggests that secure firearm storage is an essential component to any effective strategy to keep schools and students safe, Calhoun County School District and Calhoun County Sheriff's Department are asking adults to follow the principles of Be SMART. Be SMART is an acronym which encourages all adults, including gun owners, to:

S- Secure all guns in your home and vehicles (securing means unloading and locking guns and storing the ammunition separately)

M- Model responsible behavior around guns

A- Ask about the presence of unsecured guns in other homes children visit

R- Recognize the role of guns in suicide

T- Tell your peers to Be SMART

Because children and teens are curious and their developing brains have difficulty accurately assessing risk, it is an adult’s responsibility to keep their guns stored securely, so children and teens can’t access them.

It is also important to talk to your children about the importance of school safety.
